Tonkin Consulting

Our History

From humble beginnings in 1955, Tonkin Consulting has grown into the successful, thriving engineering, environmental and spatial consulting business we know today.

In 1955 Berwick (Skip) Tonkin began the business operating out of the double garage of his Woodville West home. During the 1960’s a steadily increasing demand for consulting engineering services saw the business grow and expand.

In the early 1970s our strength in stormwater engineering was taking hold. We had developed GENDRAIN software in-house, the first stormwater modeling computer application of its kind in Australia. It was a great success.

During the 1980’s the company expanded into the emerging field of traffic engineering.

At the start of the 1990s we diversified our services into environmental engineering, undertaking site contamination assessments across various sites. This formed the beginning of long standing relationships we have built within the waste management sector.

In the late 1990s, pursuing internal interests in Geographical Information Systems, we moved into spatial consulting. We saw the opportunities this provided the business as a whole and made significant investments in this emerging technology. We continued offering services to government and the private sectors and had built a reputation for being at the cutting edge of technology and engineering advances. This continued into the new century with us again identifying an emerging market — asset management. We invested in skills and systems to build this market with great success.

In the early 2000s we expanded geographically with a merge of Trevor R Jones Pty Ltd to have a presence in Mt Gambier and moved into Berri and Darwin in the later part of the decade. We opened our fifth office in Mildura in 2015 - our 60th year of doing business.
