Adelaide Metropolitan Rail Upgrade
In preparation for electrification of rail lines, the rail network for Noarlunga and large proportion of Gawler domestic rail lines required an upgrade which included a number of improvements including the horizontal and vertical geometry, ensuring adequate clearance under bridges, replacing the wooden sleepers with concrete sleepers and improving the track drainage system.
Tonkin Consulting was engaged for the design of the drainage component which consisted of approximately 60km of rail line and the preparation of a suite of drainage design drawings. Tonkin Consulting engaged collaboratively with two interstate design teams, the client and the contractor.
Design was completed using 12d software, with the drainage design needing to interface directly with the rail formation design models to ensure adequate cover for the proposed pipes and adequate capacity within the cess drains that run parallel with the tracks. With almost 60kms of rail, the output was predominantly automated including long sections and drainage schedules.
