Roper Gulf Regional Council Asset Condition Assessment
Based in the Northern Territory, Roper Gulf Regional Council is one of the largest local government areas in Australia spanning some 185,000 square kilometres. The council required accurate condition data to schedule maintenance more effectively and inform Territory and federal government funding applications.
Tonkin Consulting was commissioned to conduct a road and stormwater asset condition assessment for nine communities across the whole council to capture this data to assist in their funding applications to build and maintain assets.
The regional scale and time frame presented challenges to the project team which included the capture of data over a large area with minimal network coverage and in extreme weather environments and bringing the data together quickly for financial reporting.
Tonkin Consulting developed a solution that utilised ‘Roam’ software to collect data in the field offline using a tablet. Inverters were connected to vehicles to ensure the tablet’s battery would last for an entire day of field collection.
Upon field data being collected, Tonkin Consulting was asked to deliver workshops to council staff. The purpose of these workshops was to enable council to use the software and record additional condition data when on site in remote communities.
Tonkin Consulting was invited by Roper Gulf Regional Council to co-present the project at the 2017 NT Municipal Works Conference.
