Innovative Landfill Project

Innovative Landfill Project

Among the winners of the 2007 National Landfill Awards was the Transpacific Industries Group Northward Fill Landfill, which won the Silver Award.

The team responsible for the successful design, construction and operation of the facility is led by Transpacific Industries Group staff, and includes Tonkin Consulting (design and engineering) and Golder Associates (geotechnical).

The Northward Fill Landfill is an above ground landfill with a design capacity of approximately 17 million m3, enough to provide a disposal facility for the majority of Adelaide’s residual waste stream for around 20 to 30 years. The Inkerman Landfill receives processed waste from EPA approved Resource Recovery and Waste Transfer Facilities, which incorporate recycling and waste minimisation practices consistent with the SA Strategic Plan to minimise waste going to landfill.

A state-of-the-art facility, the landfill incorporates best practice environmental management measures including low permeability liners, a leachate collection system, landfill gas collection and reuse, litter and bird control, surface water management systems and rigorous monitoring programs.

An Australian first, this landfill utilises a specialised netting system for the effective control of birds and litter. Supported by a unique trolley and mast framework, the netting system envelopes the waste disposal area, preventing birds from getting in, while preventing litter from escaping from the site.

Paul Lightbody heads the Tonkin Consulting waste management team responsible for this and other landfill projects. For more information phone Paul on 8273 3100.
