Engineers Australia Excellence Awards
Tonkin Consulting’s innovation and technical expertise was highlighted at the recent Engineers Australia 2006 SA Division Engineering Excellence Awards. Our role as primary consultant for all civil design and environmental management strategy development for the Port River Expressway project (Stage 1) won the Excellence in Civil Engineering category.
The Expressway corridor has historically been used as a dumping ground for a wide variety of household and industrial waste. The underlying soils along the corridor were therefore at various levels of contamination and composition.The estuarine muds that form the natural. soils at the site also have very poor bearing capacity.
Our team chose an integrated design approach to solve the extensive range of challenging site conditions. At the same time, the project brief called for a high standard of infrastructure to be constructed to significantly improve access to Port Adelaide from regions to the north and northeast of the State. The integrated design solution managed the complex environmental and geotechnical issues, and provided a multi-lane arterial roadway, while minimising disruption to existing road users during the construction.
It’s worth noting that the contamination management of this project was also awarded a Commendation Award at the 2004 Engineering Excellence Awards, the 2005 ACEA National Gold Award for Environmental Projects and the 2006 National and South Australian Case Earth Awards for both Environmental and Engineering Projects greater than $15 million.
