Tim Thiel
In managing Tonkin Consulting’s Mount Gambier office, Tim Thiel has overseen a dramatic expansion of skills and services provided to the South-East region, particularly in the environmental engineering area.
In 1990 Tim joined Tonkin Consulting as a twenty-one year old graduate Civil Engineer. Initially, he was involved in a variety of projects including minor structural design, drainage design, structural checking for local government. |
Tim undertook the design, documentation and project management for numerous land division projects throughout South Australia. In 1997, his involvement with local government led to his secondment to the District Council of Kapunda and Light, as Acting District Engineer for a six-month period.
In 2000, Tim moved to Mount Gambier to manage the opening and operation of the first Tonkin Consulting regional office, following the merger with Trevor R Jones Pty Ltd.
Since the move to Mount Gambier, Tim has been involved in several major projects including the Upper South East Flood Mitigation and Drainage Management Scheme; major expansion works at Kimberly Clark Australia and a new secondary school for St Martins School.
He was responsible for the concept plans, budget estimates, detailed design and documentation of construction plans for the upgrade works for the major Robe Recreational Boating Facilities project. The project included car parking, treatment of stormwater runoff, the new boat ramp and new floating pontoon walkways.
Increasingly, environmental monitoring and management has become a major role for Tim. This work includes monitoring of groundwater wells at timber treatment plants, management of groundwater well installation, well purging and development, well gauging, sampling, field analysis and surveying.
Tim also oversees soil monitoring at wastewater irrigation sites for wineries to comply with EPA licence conditions and the preparation of annual monitoring reports for wineries and timber treatment plants including groundwater monitoring, stormwater monitoring and soil monitoring for approval by the EPA.
Congratulations Tim!

David McDonald
David McDonald believes the opportunity to tailor innovative spatial solutions – to address real business needs – is his passion and a key motivation in his role as the Spatial Information Manager at Tonkin Consulting.
David joined Tonkin Consulting in 1987. In the early 1990s David was introduced to the concept of GIS and in 2002 David completed his Diploma in Geographical Information Systems. |
During his time at Tonkin Consulting David has pioneered the use of GIS solutions in an array of projects across the commercial and government sectors – ranging from flood event mapping, application integration and development, crash statistics analysis and asset management. In July 2003 David was instrumental in Tonkin Consulting becoming a MapInfo Strategic Partner, servicing the South Australian market with MapInfo software and data sales, business development and technical support. A key advantage for clients was the applications knowledge and strategic advice that David and his team were able to provide when organisations installed the MapInfo products.
David has long been involved with the expansion and development of the GIS industry. In 2005 and again in 2006, this success led to Tonkin Consulting being awarded the MapInfo Australia/New Zealand Partner of the Year for the whole Asia-Pacific region. This year also saw the Tonkin Consulting Spatial Team being awarded a spatial industry award – the 2006 South Australian Spatial Excellence Award, in the Infrastructure Category. Recently the Tonkin Consulting Spatial Team again won the 2008 Spatial Excellence Award, in the Infrastructure Category, for its work in Asset Management.
David’s involvement with MapInfo technology has seen Tonkin Consulting and PB MapInfo become the preferred suppliers of GIS solutions for local government in South Australia. In more recent times, David has been heavily involved in the project management and implementation of several significant corporate spatial solutions.
An active member of the Australian Spatial Industry Business Association (ASIBA), David is currently a member of the South Australian Regional Management Group, a Foundation Member of the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI) and is also an active member of two course advisory panels for the spatial courses offered at TAFE SA.
David now heads a team of ten specialists at Tonkin Consulting, including accredited MapInfo trainers, technicians and client account management personnel.
Congratulations David! |
