Murtho Salt Interception Scheme

The Murtho Salt Interception Scheme (SIS) is part of the Murray Darling Basin Authority’s Basin Salinity Management Strategy, which aims to help control River Murray salinity and protect key natural resource values. The total construction value of the Murtho SIS project is approximately $30M, with the proposed scheme intercepting up to 100 tonnes of salt per day and achieving an estimated reduction of 20 EC in the River Murray at Morgan.
Tonkin Consulting has been awarded the detailed design and documentation of the Murtho SIS pipelines and associated engineering services, such as obtaining approvals, documenting electrical reticulation, pump stations, borehead details and SCADA.
The project includes up to 50km of pipeline from Murtho through to south of Renmark, discharging saline groundwater collected from a borefield of up to 50 bores to the Noora Disposal Main.
Our role includes consultation and obtaining approval from several stakeholders, including the Departments of Environment and Heritage; Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation along with numerous landowners, irrigators and community groups. The documented pipeline and borefield will result in a significant reduction in saline groundwater inflows into the River Murray as well as protection of floodplain vegetation in the Murtho area.
