The Capelli Road Wastewater Pump Station project has won the Australian Water Association SA award for Infrastructure Project Innovation. The award recognises significant and innovative projects and initiatives within the water industry.
Leed Engineering and Construction delivered the project for SA Water with Tonkin Consulting engaged by Leed to be the lead designer as part of a multidisciplinary team.
The project involved the complete replacement of the ageing pump station. The original concept design for the pump station included the use of secant piling for the wet well shaft. During the tender process, Tonkin Consulting identified an innovative construction method that involved using a segmental shaft caisson structure. This provided significant cost benefits for the project by reducing the amount of concrete required and shortening the time to install the shaft by using precast segments. The new pump station and associated works were delivered within budget and ahead of schedule.
The project has been nominated in the national awards, which will be announced at Ozwater’16 in Melbourne next year.
