Bridgestone World Solar Challenge
5 October 2017
The Bridgestone World Solar Challenge will be kicking off in just a few short days with over 40 solar powered cars racing from Darwin to Adelaide beginning on the 8th of October. Tonkin Consulting is proud to be participating with sponsorships for Adelaide University’s Lumen II, Tafe SA’s Solar Articulating Vehicle and Flinders University’s Investigator MkIII.
While being responsible for roadworthy certifications for all three cars, we also have one of our very own racing Lumen II back to Adelaide. Mechanical engineer, Brad Dalwood is part of Adelaide University’s team that has been responsible for design and construction of Lumen II. Brad will be one of four drivers racing Lumen II back to Adelaide.
Capable of speeds up to 130 kilometres per hour, Lumen II operates on solar power with an electric in-wheel hub motor and Bridgestone’s ECOPIA Ologic tyres specifically developed for solar cars. The car weighs in at roughly 170 kilograms thanks to its carbon fibre body and mechanical components manufactured from carbon fibre, titanium and aerospace grade aluminium.
We wish Brad, Lumen II and the other participants all the very best on their trip from Darwin to Adelaide!
