Tonkin Consulting developed the detailed design for a roundabout concept to replace a four way intersection of Avenue Road and Ayers Hill Road in Stirling. Now constructed, landscaped and established, it provides a feature ‘entrance’ to the town of Stirling.
Tonkin Consulting reviewed the initial concept plan, modified it and developed it to a full detailed design collaboratively with the client.
The design posed several challenges as a result of the restrictive local topography. One was to fit form and function together, as one road was on a crest, whilst the other a sag. Another was to provide adequate sight lines on the approach and through the roundabout, which was accomplished in the design.
A geotechnical survey was sought as a strategic approach to the pavement design which made greater use of the existing pavement where possible.
The design catered for the turning movement of buses and upgraded pedestrian pathways providing continuous linkages of existing paths.
