Tonkin Consulting mapped the 54 km2 First to Fifth Creeks Catchment to identify risks to properties and infrastructure in the Adelaide, Burnside, Campbelltown, Norwood Paynement and St Peters Council zones.
The mapping study highlighted predicted depths of water across the catchments due to a 1 in 100 year flood of the creeks. Councils will use the maps to prepare stormwater management plans to guide future developments which will not increase flood risk and form strategies for reducing and managing this risk.
Since completing this body of work, Tonkin Consulting has consulted on a number of mitigation works addressed in the study.
The ground-breaking TUFLOW 1D/2D simulation application was used to develop the hydraulic model of Dry Creek. Whilst the floodplain was modelled in 2D, the channel was modelled in 1D to represent the channel profile with more accuracy.
Where trees were present, survey data was used for obtaining the creek profile.
The capacity of hydraulic structures such as bridges, culverts, etc. were verified for performance..
The models behaviour was rigorously verified and calibrated to provide optimal integrity of the final floodplain maps.
