Galiwin’ku is the largest community on Elcho Island, Northern Territory, 550km north east of Dawin. The population of Galiwin’ku and its surrounds is approximately 2,100 with around 90% being Indigenous Australians.
The increased demand for housing has led to a new 100 lot subdivision of which Tonkin Consulting provided concepts, detailed design and documentation for civil services, as well as various upgrades to existing sewerage, water supply and wastewater disposal infrastructure.
This was a large, complex project requiring consultation and approval from various stakeholders including the local community, Land Council, utilities, Territory and Federal governments.
Close consultation with the client and the program managers ensured infrastructure components of the project fit the community’s expectations. The hydraulic and electrical reticulation systems were designed consultatively with Power Water Corporation, the Territory’s water and power authority.
Our open communication and consultative approach with stakeholders and the client were keys to the success of this project.
