Located on the Gawler Rail Corridor, the Munno Para Rail Station was the first of many stations to be upgraded on the Adelaide Metropolitan Passenger Rail Network over five years. Tonkin Consulting was the lead consultant in a consortium comprising head contractor Bardavcol, Swanbury Penglase Architects, and Nilsen Electrical.
The design focus for the new station was on functionality and safety. It also had to be attractive and commuter-friendly to encourage people to use public transport. Of course it also had to be cost-effective and minimise environmental impacts throughout construction, work within the site constraints and incorporate innovative design elements.
A major design challenge was a level difference of nearly 2m between the existing Alawoona Road, and proposed new platform level, located some 20m away. An integrated at-grade bus interchange was designed to meet this constraint
2012 CCF Earth Award for outstanding construction.
