The Village Heart is defined by two pedestrian crossings, an existing one, slightly relocated and a new one. The road section between the crossings and approaches was upgraded with high quality paving, street furniture, feature kerbs and landscaping. The roadway was completely redesigned to match new footpath/ kerb levels. Stormwater from adjacent property rooves provides a self-sustaining irrigation system recycled for the new landscaping.
Jensen Planning devised the Master Plan for Prospect, nominating the stretch of Prospect Road between Rose and Olive Streets, the ‘Village Heart’ of Prospect. Tonkin Consulting providing engineering design for the new streetscape, communicating with planners and Council. The key feature of the new streetscape is the wide footpaths creating a more pedestrian-friendly area.
Establishing optimum road/footpath levels was critical and constrained by the floor level of adjacent shopfronts which had to be safe from heavy rain events. Telstra, water and gas services posed further design constraints, particularly with the new drainage system design. Traffic management design was a major consideration.
