The Sunlands pump station is located on the River Murray and comprises 5 vertical turbine pumps drawing water from the river with a maximum pumping rate of 1280L/s into the Sunlands Irrigation network. Central Irrigation Trust (CIT) had recently taken over ownership, maintenance and operation of the Sunlands irrigation system.
Central Irrigation Trust engaged Tonkin Consulting to undertake a structural and mechanical condition assessment of the Sunlands Irrigation Pump Station in early 2013.
Tonkin identified WHS considerations and maintenance activities required for the station. Cost estimates were developed to inform CIT in their decision making for operating and capital budgets and considerations for the timing of infrastructure upgrades at Sunlands were also assessed and provided by Tonkin Consulting.
The assessment considered the cost of refurbishment of the pump wet end, including epoxy coating of impellers and bowls, compared to complete replacement of the wet end as well as the resulting expected useful life associated with each approach.
