Victoria Road Stormwater Pump Station

Tonkin Consulting has assisted the City of Port Adelaide Enfield over the past decade with initial planning and then staged implementation of major capacity upgrades to the stormwater drainage system in this area. These works address historical flooding issues and will reduce the occurrence and severity of these events. The final stage of these upgrades requires a major new pump station, which discharges collected stormwater to the Port River. Tonkin Consulting has recently completed the detailed engineering design of this pump station and is supporting the City with ongoing technical input to the construction and commissioning phase.

Tonkin Consulting undertook the detailed engineering design of the pump station and associated works including all civil, structural, mechanical and power supply elements. Instrumentation and control systems were designed to a conceptual level in order to allow these systems to be delivered as part of an integrated construction and commissioning contract.

Tonkin Consulting managed various investigations on behalf of the City including subcontracted geotechnical and acoustic testing at the site. Environmental investigations into soil contamination and acid sulphate soil risks were undertaken by Tonkin Consulting’s internal specialists.

Tonkin Consulting assisted the City with design information to suit the development approval process and participated in discussions with project stakeholders such as the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, SA Water and the neighbouring community.

Tonkin Consulting also developed and implemented a project risk management framework as well as facilitating Safety in Design and HAZOP workshops during the design phase.

The pump station design includes a large below ground concrete structure with five submersible pumps, large twin inlet screen structures, valve pits, above ground lifting equipment, access road and control buildings. The concrete structure is approximately 10m deep and the maximum discharge flowrate is approximately 2,800L/s.
