Tonkin Consulting developed the detailed design and documentation of a wetland scheme over 4 hectares sited on the intersection of Sturt and Marion Roads. Running adjacent the Sturt River, the wetland was designed to intercept and treat polluted stormwater from the river to substantially reduce the concentration of wide ranging contaminants.
Tonkin Consulting managed and coordinated the design team; completed the civil design work; documented the civil works contract; administered and supervised the civil works construction.
The site has particular significance of culture and heritage for Indigenous Australians and other other local community groups. Extensive community consultation was undertaken to ensure the final design met the requirements of these groups. The community expectations were balanced with the Catchment Board’s functional requirements to produce a design that supported a diverse aquatic ecosystem. This included a solution that would not create odours or nuisance insects but provide recreational space and the potential for a future acquifer storage and recovery scheme for recycling the water.
Tonkin Consulting was awarded a commendation award in the environmental section of the 2000 Institution of Engineers Australia Excellence Awards for this project.
