Walker Place Redevelopment, Gawler SA

Tonkin is proud to have been on the team that delivered the award-winning Walker Place redevelopment at Gawler.

The project was submitted to the IPWEA SA Excellence Awards by Town of Gawler and was recently awarded Best Public Works Project under $2.0M.

Tonkin was engaged to provide civil, stormwater, structural, electrical/lighting and pavement design services to WAX Design, the contractor tasked with redeveloping Walker Place.

Tonkin worked in collaboration with WAX Design to prepare the detailed designs for the reconstruction project.

The Town of Gawler wanted a unique public realm for visitors and the community, that connected the main street, shopping areas and open spaces, and had the potential to become the heart of the town.

Tonkin developed the civil, stormwater, structural, electrical/lighting and pavement designs for the project.

The Walker Place redevelopment features:

  • A paved shared space with a focus on pedestrian access
  • Road safety improvements that constraint vehicle movements to reduce speeds
  • Parking spaces, including disability parking
  • Overhead catenary lighting to enhance the area
  • Improved stormwater infrastructure, including water sensitive urban design.

The redevelopment of Walker Place provides the Gawler community with a new space for casual meetings over lunch, as well as a new event space for community events.

It also provides stronger connectivity between the main street and the natural environment along the South Para River.

Four months on from the official opening of Walker Place, the garden beds are becoming lush and the trees are set to provide a lovely shady canopy over this new community precinct for years to come.

“It was a pleasure working with the Town of Gawler and WAX Design to help deliver this rejuvenated community precinct. We are looking forward to seeing residents and visitors to Gawler enjoy this upgraded outdoor space as the weather warms up.
