How did you find out about Tonkin’s Work in the Regions Program and why did you decide to apply?
I saw a LinkedIn post about the opportunity in the regional program, and it aligned well for me because I would like to gain more work experience as a civil drafter, and I’m happy to work in locations different from where I currently live. When a member of Tonkin’s recruitment team reached out to me that truly felt like the best message of the year! Tonkin has a strong reputation in civil engineering and delivers high-quality work across various engineering disciplines. I believe this would be a great environment to build on my background and further develop my civil drafting skillset.
Which of Tonkin’s regional offices are you going to and what did you do during your meet & greet visit?
I had the opportunity to work with the Mildura team during my three-month training period. As part of this, I visited the team in Mildura for a week, which was a great experience. Before the visit, I had heard from Tonkin staff in Adelaide that the Mildura team was great to work with—and after spending time with them, it was clear how supportive and welcoming they are.
My role in the Mildura projects involved working directly with engineers, which made it easy for me to absorb knowledge about engineering design. While I was on my initial training period in Mildura, I also had the chance to support the Adelaide traffic team. This experience helped me practice working remotely, which will be useful if teams in other locations ever need additional support.

What are you looking forward to most about moving to a regional area?
The work environment is slightly different between the Adelaide office, where there are many people, and the Mildura office, which has a smaller team. However, this difference does not affect my career goal of becoming a skilled civil drafter. In fact, I feel encouraged by the career development opportunities available to me as a drafter at Tonkin. Mildura is also a lovely regional city to settle in, and it offers a great environment for building new social connections outside of work.
