Working in Tonkin’s regional offices is a fantastic opportunity for those who would like to work for a national engineering consultancy, while also enjoying the benefits that come with living in a regional area of Australia.
Tonkin has three regional offices – in Mount Gambier, Mildura and Berri.
Our regional offices are comprised of civil engineers, structural engineers, designers, drafters and other support staff.
Mount Gambier, South Australia
As South Australia’s second largest city, Mount Gambier offers many of the benefits of living in a metropolitan area, while still having a small-town feel. Tonkin’s Mount Gambier office was established in 2000 and has a solid reputation as the leading engineering consultancy in the South-East region of South Australia.

Mildura, Victoria
Tonkin's Mildura office was established in 2015. Over the past 10 years, the office has steadily grown in staff numbers, and the types of projects we deliver has expanded. Several of our staff are originally from the local area, while others moved to Mildura and enjoy the laidback, country lifestyle. Our Mildura team is passionate about designing and delivering infrastructure that will serve the local community as the city continues to grow.
Berri, South Australia
Established in 2014, Tonkin's Berri office works with clients across South Australia's Riverland region and beyond. Over the years we've developed close working relationships with many councils in the area. If you love the outdoors, the River Murray on your doorstep will provide endless opportunities to enjoy water sports and activities and the town has a great community spirit.

Benefits of working in Tonkin’s regional offices
Some of the great things that come with working in the regions include:
Fast-track your career growth – If you have big plans for your career, working in a regional setting is a great way to get a wide range of experience and take on higher levels of responsibility.
Work-life balance – Ditch the long commute! Working in Tonkin’s regional offices means you cut down the time you spend travelling to and from work, and spend more time doing the things you enjoy most.
Cost of living – With housing costs making buying a home harder in metropolitan areas, for many people, moving to work in a regional area is the ticket to paying less rent and/or buying a home.
Closer to family and friends – Many of our staff are originally from country areas and are happy to have the opportunity to move back home after finishing uni or after working in the city for a few years.
Preparing for Work in the Regions Program
To support new Tonkin staff who join our regional offices, our Preparing for Work in the Regions Program is a six-month paid training and development program that equips our people with the skills and knowledge they need to be a successful engineering consultant in a regional area.
As part of the program, staff undertake their first six months at Tonkin’s Adelaide head office, where they work closely with our senior staff and leaders, as well as our support teams including human resources, finance, IT and business development.
For some of the staff on this program, Adelaide is already home, while others may move to Adelaide from interstate or overseas, before eventually moving to their preferred Tonkin regional office.
While working in Adelaide, you will visit your preferred regional office location to ensure it will be the right fit for you.
Following the six-month program, staff then move to one of Tonkin’s three regional offices. This allows our regional team members to feel well-equipped to hit the ground running, while also having developed close relationships with staff in our headquarters, who will continue to provide valuable support.
The Preparing for Work in the Regions Program is optional depending on applicants’ experience level and is negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
