Tonkin's history

When Skip Tonkin was appointed as National President of Engineers Australia in 1989, journal of the institution published a five-page feature article about Skip and the Practice.
Tonkin was founded in 1955 by Berwick (Skip) Tonkin, establishing itself as a specialist in stormwater engineering with the development of Australia’s first stormwater modelling computer application.

A reputation for engineering advancement and cutting-edge technology has been a constant thread throughout our history, and has seen the company diversify into traffic engineering, environmental engineering, water engineering, spatial consulting and asset management.

Opportunities to expand through mergers and acquisitions have taken Tonkin into many new markets. After humble beginnings as a home business, Tonkin has grown to become an accomplished consultancy with a national footprint and more than 250 staff.

In recent times, Tonkin has been involved in a variety of landmark infrastructure projects around Australia.

We are continually learning, diversifying and taking on new challenges as we provide our clients with imaginative and dependable solutions.

Tonkin remains employee-owned with our head office in Adelaide.
