The new Brighton Oval buildings have been officially opened, providing the local community and sporting clubs with exciting new facilities to enjoy.

Tonkin’s Adelaide team has been working in collaboration with City of Holdfast Bay on the project, which involves construction of three new clubrooms for the Brighton Football, Cricket, Rugby and Lacrosse Clubs and all associated civil and landscaping infrastructure.

In 2018, Tonkin was initially engaged by Council to provide general technical advice and support throughout the clubroom design and tender process. Our engagement went on to include master plan and concept development, detailed design and construction support for the entire site.
The City of Holdfast Bay wanted to:
  • Provide modern facilities for the whole community to use and enjoy
  • Increase participation across all sporting codes possible
  • Deliver accessible, unisex facilities
  • Increase level of community involvement
  • Create a safe and welcoming environment for all.

The masterplan phase of the project provided strategic direction for the civil work to ensure project objectives could be achieved. This included coordination of the various site elements such as clubrooms, carparks, landscaping, water sensitive urban design, pedestrian pathways, play space, barbeque/picnic areas, cricket nets and basketball courts.

The masterplan presented various challenges, including optimising space to facilitate project objectives, maximising carparks without compromising other site elements, coordinating with existing site infrastructure and managing the needs and expectations of three sporting clubs. Minimising impact on existing trees and playing fields were also important considerations. We worked closely with Council and other stakeholders throughout the masterplan phase to develop a solution that met the project objectives.

Following masterplan and concept development, in late 2019 Tonkin commenced detailed design and documentation of all civil elements. This detailed design included carpark and access roads, driveway entrances, pedestrian pathways, disability access and parking, earthworks design, stormwater drainage infrastructure, retaining walls, and lighting and electrical design. The design also incorporated unique water sensitive urban design elements, exciting landscaping features and community facilities such as a basketball court and barbeque seating area.

By partnering with Outerspace for landscape architecture design and Bestec for services design, we delivered well-coordinated design outcomes.

Tonkin continued to support Council throughout the tender and construction phases of the civil works, delivered by Outside Ideas.
