Christina Bruno, Leader – NT, and Ben Staniford, Senior Engineer, have taken out the NT and SA Young Water Professional of the Year awards respectively.
Christina accepted her award at the 30th anniversary celebration dinner of Water in the Bush, whilst Ben received his at the AWA SA Branch Awards. Christina has gained experience not only through her work within Tonkin, but also her capacity as a volunteer for Engineers without Borders for the past four years and as a member of the AWA NT Branch Committee and AWA Young Water Professional National Taskforce. Since moving to Darwin from Adelaide a couple of years ago, Christina has worked hard, gaining an insight to the challenges of providing infrastructure for remote communities in a tropical climate, and has quickly moved through the ranks to lead our Darwin office. She is a highly motivated individual with a passion for making the world a better place, the water industry and our future’s sustainability.
As a dinner sponsor for the event, Tonkin was allocated a speaking spot during which Christina delivered a speech on climate change, the Northern Territory’s municipal water supply and the potential issues that will arise if the rains don’t occur. Even if you take climate change out of the equation, the weather seems to be becoming more erratic and it has become obvious over the past few months that Australia is in the grip of another severe drought.
Christina’s talk focussed on planning now to provide a climate resilient water supply, that is not only environmentally sustainable but economical.
