Tonkin releases first voluntary Modern Slavery Position Statement

Tonkin’s first voluntary Modern Slavery Statement sets out the steps we are taking to address and minimise the risks of modern slavery in our operations and supply chains.

While slavery may seem like an issue of the past, there are more people affected by slavery now than ever before in history.

Worldwide, more than 40 million people are estimated to be trapped in modern slavery situations, where they are severely exploited for personal or commercial gain.

Approximately 22 percent of forced labour victims globally are found in the manufacture and production of raw materials, including in forestry, mining and quarrying. These industries are key suppliers for property and construction – sectors engineers operate in.

For engineering consulting firms in Australia, the key risk areas in our supply chains include building and construction, engineering goods, facilities, fleet and logistics, information communication technology, office supplies, travel, and utilities and fuels.

While Tonkin is not a mandated reporting entity under the Commonwealth Modern Slavery Act 2018, we have voluntarily chosen to comply with this legislation starting with the 2020-21 reporting period.

Our business practices are founded in care and putting people first.
We believe sustainable business practices should integrate social, economic and environmental issues into our core business processes to achieve environmentally and socially responsible operations.

We care about people across all aspects of our value chain. We prioritise the safety, health and wellbeing of our people, partners, clients, communities.

We are committed to extending our values of care, trust, excellence and collaboration to the people who work in our extended supply chain and the suppliers who engage them.

By releasing a voluntary Modern Slavery Position Statement, we hope to make a positive social impact on modern slavery in alignment with our overall commitment to sustainable business practices.

We also hope to encourage industry wide prioritisation of anti-modern slavery initiatives. Together, our industry can make a positive impact in the fight against modern slavery.

“Tonkin’s first Modern Slavery Statement is a demonstration of our commitment to sustainable business practices and putting people at the heart of everything we do. We see far-reaching benefits in ethical engagement across our supply chain and hope our efforts may encourage other consulting firms to approach this issue with the commitment it deserves.”
