Tonkin enjoyed success at the Consult Australia Awards in Sydney on 31 March, winning the sought-after title of Medium Firm of the Year, as well as the Award for Innovative Design.
Medium Firm of the Year | Hall of Fame
We’re proud that Tonkin has been awarded Medium Firm of the Year; the company’s third consecutive Medium Firm of the Year award in this category, which also takes Tonkin into the prestigious OneConsult Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is the highest accolade a company can receive from Consult Australia and celebrates companies that exhibit leadership excellence in their field.
With ‘Excellence’ being one of Tonkin’s key values, this industry recognition further compliments Tonkin’s strong credentials as a leading mid-sized engineering consultancy. Tonkin currently employs more than 170 people across Australia and has eight offices across four states. The company has embarked on a growth strategy that has seen Tonkin’s teams expand, particularly in New South Wales and Queensland in recent years.

Award for Excellence in Innovative Design
Tonkin also received an Award for Excellence in Innovative Design for our work on the Parramatta Escarpment Boardwalk.
The boardwalk is a crucially important piece of infrastructure for Parramatta; design of the new boardwalk is one of the key missing links that resolves continuous foreshore access for pedestrians and cyclists from the University of Western Sydney at Rydalmere to Parramatta Park. It also provides a new set of stairs up to Stewart Street and Macarthur Street to ensure safe and direct access for the public and local school students.
Completed in early 2021, the project builds on City of Parramatta’s ambition to refocus the city to the river, and will contribute to waterside celebrations, activation, and recreation.
Tonkin was engaged by lead architect Hill Thalis to provide concept design, detailed structural design and construction phase services for the 225m-long, three-metre wide concrete walkway and cycleway.
“Tonkin is proud to have worked with Hill Thalis to deliver the City of Paramatta with the long-awaited boardwalk that connects the city and the river. The new boardwalk is a modern architectural feature that has been designed with the local community in mind. It’s wonderful to receive recognition from our industry peers for this innovative project that will benefit the community for many years to come.” – Andrew Sutton, Tonkin Project Leader
Several of Tonkin’s nominations also received high commendations from the judges, including:
- Collaboration for Project Excellence – for our ‘Greening the Desert’ project with BHP and Roxby Council
- Olivia Oliver – Champion of Change – Female Leadership
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees and thank you to all our Tonkin team members who have contributed to these fantastic results.
