The Craig Gilbert Leadership Award (CGLA) is presented annually to the South Australian engineering student who, having completed the penultimate year of their degree, has demonstrated the most outstanding self-discipline, practical engineering ability, interpersonal skills and leadership potential among their peers.
Craig joined Tonkin in 1988 and played a key role in developing major South Australian projects, including a large contribution to the duplication of Robe Terrace and the design of the Port River Expressway. He became a director in 1993, after only five years at Tonkin and at the age of 28. By 1997, he was Deputy Managing Director and in December 2001, at the age of 36, Craig became the third Managing Director in Tonkin’s 48-year history. Craig passed away in 2003, aged 38, after a short illness. During his career, he displayed the most outstanding self-discipline, practical engineering ability, interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. Even as a student, he was admired by his peers for these qualities, which served him well throughout his career.
The CGLA was created as a perpetual tribute in memory of Craig and is presented annually by Engineers Australia at the Sir Eric Neal address. Tonkin sponsors the award and this year marks the 15th anniversary of the award.
Tonkin hosted a dinner earlier in the year with the past recipients to celebrate the anniversary of the award.
