Celebrating 65 Years

National
20 February 2020
Last week, Tonkin celebrated our 65th birthday.

We opened our celebrations with a full company morning tea, just the beginning of a whole year of commemoration including our 20th anniversary in Mount Gambier, a series of client events and our bi-annual staff conference. We’ve come a long way since Berwick ‘Skip’ Tonkin founded the company in 1955. When Tonkin began, we were quickly established as a stormwater engineering specialist, developing Australia’s first stormwater modelling computer application.

This penchant for engineering advancement and cutting-edge technology has been a constant thread throughout our history and has seen Tonkin diversify into a range of sectors including transport, structural, maritime, environmental, waste management and water supply and treatment, as well as spatial consulting and asset management. During the past 65 years, we have expanded our company through mergers and acquisitions, taking us into new markets. After our humble beginnings as a home business in Skip’s garage, we have grown to be a reputable national company, with nine offices across Australia.

In recent times, we have been involved in a variety of landmark projects including a world-class motor sport facility at Tailem Bend and an important upgrade of the Kangaroo Island airport, South Australia’s first carbon offset project. We continue to learn and diversify, taking on new challenges whilst providing our clients with imaginative and dependable solutions.

We can’t wait to see what the next 65 years bring, but if the past 65 are anything to go by, it will be a very exciting time. For more on our history, visit this page.

UPDATE: Please note due to COVID-19 we have postponed all client events until further notice to ensure the continued safety of our staff and the community. We look forward to bringing you these events later in the year when it is safe to do so.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
