Jeff Tyler named SA Water Professional of the Year

Tonkin’s Jeff Tyler received the Premier’s Water Medal: Water Professional of the Year award at the Australian Water Association SA Awards Dinner on 8 November.

During his 30-year career, Jeff, Principal Engineer in Tonkin’s Water Team, has demonstrated exceptional passion and commitment to the water sector. His visionary yet down-to-earth leadership style has inspired positive change, both through his work at Tonkin, and across the water sector more broadly.  

Jeff has made a significant positive impact across the water industry. He has led several water projects of state significant, mentored other engineers and supported their professional development, and his technical expertise and advice is much sought-after across the sector. 

While Jeff isn’t usually one for the ‘limelight’, that hasn’t stopped him building a reputation as one of South Australia’s most influential and sought-after water engineers.

Jeff’s success as a water professional is in large part because he has such a well-rounded mix of experience, expertise and positive personality traits. He is technically astute, an effective project manager, people love working with him, and his dedication and passion for the advancement of the water sector is clear for everyone to see.

Jeff is a highly technical Principal Engineer in the disciplines of Civil and Structural Engineering, while also being exceptionally skilled in both people and project management. Jeff is experienced and sought-after in the design of large-scale water transfer and distribution systems. His experience extends to all areas of storage (dams, tanks, reservoirs), delivery (pump stations, intake and pipeline design) and distribution (pipe networks, outfall). Further to this, Jeff possesses a thorough understanding of coastal processes and their impact on the proposed solutions, as well as a strong appreciation of wave climate and energy, sand and sediment movements.

All of this combines to make Jeff an exceptionally talented engineer, an inspiring leader and an all-round great person with many outstanding contributions to the water industry.
