Cultana Solar Farm
Client:
SIMEC Energy Australia
Location:
Whyalla, SA
Providing advisory services for one of Australia’s largest solar developments.
What we did
Tonkin was engaged by SIMEC Energy Australia to undertake flood modelling and planning advisory services for the proposed Cultana Solar Farm, one of Australia’s largest photovoltaic solar developments located north of Whyalla.
The project involved detailed hydrology and two dimensional hydraulic flood modelling to assess flood risk across the Cultana North and South sites. Using high-resolution LiDAR survey data and industry standard modelling tools, Tonkin assessed flood behaviour for the 1% Annual Exceedance Probability event, providing clear mapping of flood depth and
extent across the proposed development footprint.
The flood study informed early planning decisions, supported engagement with insurers and regulators, and provided confidence that site layout and infrastructure could be appropriately designed to manage flood risk. Tonkin’s advice also considered the
interaction between flooding, panel infrastructure, inverter stations and transmission elements to support future detailed design and approvals processes.
