Supporting a vital community asset through our pro-bono delivery of the new Kawana SLSC.
Tonkin was engaged to provide structural engineering for the upgrade of the Kawana Surf Life Saving Club, enabling a significant transformation of the beachfront facility.
While the project included partial demolition of the southern building, Tonkin’s role focused on providing the structural engineering solutions required to integrate new works seamlessly with the remaining facilities.
Key retained elements included the 843m² Supporters Club areas, the existing bistro and kitchen, first aid room, the southern amenities block and change room, and the beachfront lifeguard tower. Our engineering approach ensured these facilities remained protected and operational while new structural elements were introduced around them.
The new design included a two-storey extension at the southern end of the club, designed to expand capacity and functionality while responding to coastal conditions.
At ground level, the structure accommodates increased surf lifesaving equipment storage and a new club entrance and reception area. Above, a dedicated upper level supports surf lifesaving club operations, including administration offices, training and meeting rooms, additional visitor amenities, and the Kawana Waters RSL Sub-Brand Office.
What we did
Our role focused on developing a robust, efficient, and buildable structural framework that supports long-term performance, durability, and architectural intent.
Our skilled team provided design and documentation of the foundation and substructure systems. We also engineered the retaining walls and on-ground floor slabs to deliver stability, durability and reliable performance in a demanding coastal environment.
Our services further extended to the structural steelwork supporting the façade system, ensuring seamless coordination between structural and architectural elements. Concrete external pavements were also designed to provide long-term performance under operational and environmental conditions that would withstand being adjacent to the Kawana beachfront.
How we made a difference
Over 700m² of the club facilities have been redesigned and rebuild, strengthening the Kawana’s operational capability. Our engineering supported robust, functional spaces designed to accommodate equipment, training, and emergency response requirements.
Through detailed analysis, coordination, and documentation, Tonkin delivered the structural backbone of the project. We were able to enable construction certainty, support design ambition, and ensure the facility performs safely and reliably for years to come.
With many of Tonkin’s local staff actively involved with the Kawana Surf Life Saving Club, our team proudly provided structural services on a pro‑bono basis. This reflects our commitment to supporting vital community assets in our local area.
