Tonkin was engaged to provide civil and structural engineering services for a new building for Multiple Sclerosis, the MS Wellbeing Centre in Lidcombe, New South Wales.
What we did
The Wellbeing Centre is a collaborative and inclusive therapeutic environment, focused on supporting physical, emotional, and cognitive needs of people with neurological conditions, their loved ones and healthcare teams.
Tonkin’s scope of works included end-to-end services, from an initial review of the site and concept designs to site visits during practical completion. Our appointment as consulting engineers ensured that the new MS Wellbeing Centre was delivered to the highest standards, providing a supportive environment tailored to the needs of its users.
Tonkin also provide concept designs for the adjoining residential building, boasting 20 fit-for-purpose specialist disability apartments.

How we made a difference
Our long-standing relationship with DEM facilitated smooth communication between civil and structural design and architectural, interior, and landscape design.
At the heart of the center's vision was the aim to create a non-institutionalised care experience, complimented by beautiful open spaces and lush green areas.
The structural design of the building incorporates various elements, including exposed structural timber elements, structural steelwork framing for the entrance awning and canopies, steelwork to support the facade system, and the structural design of in-situ detention, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and functional resilience.

What we achieved
The new MS Wellbeing Centre was officially opening in November 2024.
The outcome of this project posed a significant impact on those living with multiple sclerosis. A state-of-the-art home away from home, for both staff and the larger neurological community.
The new centre includes large open areas and a café space, purpose-built gym, Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant change facilities, a sensory garden with an open courtyard, and a multipurpose space for classes, workshops and more.
