Building a new sporting and learning precinct for the Limestone Coast
Work is underway on Stage 3 of Tenison Woods College's Master Building Plan, delivering a major new sporting and learning precinct design to support students and the broader Limestone Coast community.
With ground broken and earthworks now underway, construction is expected to commence late 2026. The $11.874 million development will bring together new and upgraded sporting, educational and community facilities, centred around a FIFA-certified synthetic soccer pitch.
Tonkin is providing civil and structural engineering services across the redevelopment, working closely with Edge Architects and the wider project team to integrate the new facilities within the existing campus. Our involvement spans design development and detailed documentation through to construction support and inspections.

Stage 3 will significantly transform the College's existing sporting facilities, creating a connected precinct incorporating a new synthetic soccer pitch, sport pavilion, outdoor courts, cricket nets and upgrades to the existing Barrie Homes Stadium.
The new sports pavilion will provide changerooms, a gym, and storage facilities alongside spaces supporting learning and co-curricular activities. New external paths, stairs and ramps will help connect the different elements of the development and integrate the precinct with the wider campus.
Together these facilities will create flexible sporting and learning environment for students while extending the benefits of the project to local sporting clubs and the wider community.

Our role
Our civil design encompasses bulk earthworks and site levels, stormwater drainage, pavements, carparking and external access infrastructure. This is complemented by structural design for the new buildings and covered areas, including roof structures, wall framing, columns, and floor slabs, along with modifications to existing facilities.
Tonkin also undertook geotechnical investigations to inform the design of the new pavilion. As the project moves into construction, our team will continue to provide technical support through site inspections, structural shop drawing reviews and responses to construction queries, helping to ensure the final outcome aligns with the engineering design intent.

Creating lasting community value
Stage 3 is more than an upgrade to the college's sporting facilities. By creating high-quality spaces that can support both school and community use, the project will provide new opportunities for sport, learning and participation across Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast.
The completed precinct will give students access to contemporary facilities throughout the school day while providing valuable infrastructure for local sporting organisations and community users beyond school hours.
For Tonkin, the project is an opportunity to combine local presence with multidisciplinary engineering expertise to help deliver an enduring facility for everyone to enjoy.
