Glenelg Tram Upgrades

What we did
Adelaide’s tram network is a vital public transport link used by thousands of commuters each day travelling between the CBD and the coast. In late 2025, essential upgrades along the Glenelg to Adelaide city tram line required a temporary network closure to allow for major improvement works.
Tonkin was engaged by Acciona Rail to deliver a suite of design services supporting these upgrades. Working closely with Acciona Rail’s construction team, Tonkin developed detailed designs for several key improvements along the line. These works enhance accessibility in line with the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT), improve passenger information and safety, and support network operations with upgraded on-route facilities.
What We Achieved
Tonkin supported improvements to passenger experience and network accessibility along the Glenelg tram line through a suite of design services delivered in collaboration with Acciona and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport.
Joslin–Parsons Ramp and Pathway Upgrades
At Stop 2 in Wayville, Tonkin completed the design for upgrades to the Joslin-Parsons ramp and adjacent pathway, as well as the relocation designs for the Moresby Street pedestrian crossing. Our team undertook a site inspection to confirm scope, constraints and the most suitable design approach. This ensured the new ramp and pedestrian crossing would meet all Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) access requirements and provide safe and compliant accessible walkways.
Tonkin delivered detailed designs for the DDA-compliant ramp including compliant gradients, landings, tactile ground surface indicators and lighting to the ramps, crossing and paths in accordance with Australian standards. We also provided localised drainage and surface water design for the new ramp and pathway, along with upgraded fencing to meet SAPTA/PTSA Tram Network Standards.
Passenger Information Totems
Tonkin’s transport team delivered comprehensive construction details for the installation of new passenger information totems installed along the full tram corridor. Each stop now includes two totems, one for each direction of travel. The totems provide clear tram and travel information, live wait times and other useful details to support passengers and improve wayfinding across the network.
Driver Bathroom Facility at Stop 15
Tonkin provided comprehensive design and construction documentation for a new driver bathroom facility at Stop 15. This included site-specific design of water, sewerage, stormwater and power reticulation, as well as access and entry points suited to the local topography and surrounding pathways. The amenity building was designed to match existing facilities along the tram route, ensuring consistency in appearance and user experience.
