Tonkin was engaged to deliver on-site civil and drainage design services for the proposed wind farm at the West Musgrave Mine, supporting the development of renewable energy infrastructure in a remote mining environment.
Our scope focused on the detailed design of internal access roads, new intersections and turbine hardstands to safely accommodate construction traffic, oversize loads and ongoing operational access. Designs were developed to suit site-specific terrain, ground conditions and construction methodologies, with a strong emphasis on constructability, safety and long-term performance.
To inform the on-site layout and earthworks design, Tonkin undertook flood mapping of the broader catchment to understand overland flow paths and flood behaviour across the site. The results were used to assess potential impacts on turbine locations, substation sites and access roads, and to establish appropriate platform and road levels to minimise flood
risk and maintain access during extreme rainfall events.
This integrated approach ensured the civil infrastructure was appropriately elevated, well-drained and resilient, supporting efficient construction and reliable operation of the wind farm within a complex, remote site context.
